I think these points are spot on. Regarding suggestion #1, do you have advice for Substackers like me who might not have a real "niche" for their newsletter? I am resistant to limiting myself to one topic but I am fully aware that I will probably have to hone in on something if I want to grow. Is there room out there for Substacks that are more like blogs?

I agree - but I think go narrow to allow yourself to eventually go wide. Unless you have an incredible style, social following etc, broad is pretty common. Find your weird.

Great advice. Thanks, Codie! I feel this resonates with something I just learned. Constraint breeds creativity. The narrower your niche is, the more creative you need to be to write for your obsessive audience (borrowing the term from David Perrel).

You can always start broad and niche down... when we started this idea for Grow Getters, we were thinking Growth Hacking in general.. then narrowed it down to growth hacking newsletters.

Think about what general topic you're most knowledgeable about or an expert in, then niche down.
